AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The remains of a Fort Gordon soldier who died in Afghanistan were returned to his hometown of Greenville, N.C., on Tuesday.
Spc. Joshua Nelson, 22, was killed during insider attacks on Sept. 16 in the Zabul province of Afghanistan.
His remains arrived Tuesday morning at the Pitt-Greenville Airport.
Patriot Guard and American Legion riders escorted the remains to the funeral home.
Military leaders say Nelson and three others -- Sgt. Sapuro B. Nena, Pfc. Genaro Bedoy and Pfc. Jon R. Townsend -- were attacked by Afghan police officers who turned on them during an attack at a checkpoint.
Nelson entered the Army last year and leaves behind a wife.
He will be buried at the Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.
