KABUL, Afghanistan -- A South Carolina man working with the US Army Corps of Engineers in Afghanistan is dead after being kidnapped earlier this week.

The Department of Defense says 59-year-old James "Will" Coker, from Mount Pleasant, was killed Monday.

Officials told the Associated Press that Coker, a Navy civilian, was kidnapped from a power plant where he was working and later strangled.

His family says he was to come home later this month.

Coker worked for Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic in Norfolk, Va.
