VILLA RICA, Ga. (AP) -- Girl Scout leaders say their members feared they would be hauled off to jail after a police officer told them to quit selling Girl Scout cookies because they needed to get a permit.

The Girl Scouts had set up a stand at a Villa Rica strip mall
when the officer asked troop members if they had a peddler's permit.

Troop Leader Kathy Crook said she was stunned, and disturbed at the reaction of the younger Daisies in the group. She said the younger girls thought they would all be taken to jail.

Collins said they spoke with the officer, and they believe he did nothing wrong. The city does have a peddler's permit ordinance.

Troop 7984 now has a permit and plans to resume cookie sales Saturday.
