Voices & Vibes: Peach State bands battle it out at Lucy Laney

Monday, July 16, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Families around Augusta gathered at Lucy Laney Stadium to enjoy the Peach State All-Star Battle of the Bands over the weekend.

"We're out here to raise awareness in the community of the need of the arts and continuing the arts programs in the schools," said Power 107 radio personality P-Nyce.

Each band consisted of young boys and girls who competed to see which group had the best performance.

"Being a director, I just wanted to get some of the kids off the streets and into something positive," said Latoy Harrison, a band director for one of the groups.

With the recent violence in the area, organizers said it was important for the community to enjoy a family-friendly event.

"Instead of stopping the good stuff from going on because of the bad, let's keep the good stuff going to try and overpower the bad," said one of the event coordinators, Antonio Allen.

Cpt. Scott Peebles was also present to show support and offer heartfelt words for the audience.

"We want our youth to be doing positive things. We're always talking about how our youth get into a lot of negative stuff, but when they do something positive, we need to come out as a city and support them," Peebles said.

As the sounds of instruments flooded the stadium, organizers knew the Peach State event hit every note on the music sheet.

"The families, they're loving it. They'd much rather see their kids on the field rather than out here in the streets somewhere," Allen said.
