COLUMBIA CTY., Ga. -- Firefighters in Columbia County were busy Friday morning after two fires started around 2 a.m.
The first fire was reported on the 4700 block of Rhett Drive in Evans. A teenager woke up to the sound of crackling and went downstairs to investigate. She opened the door to a room and it was on fire. She immediately closed the door and ran through the house to wake the family and get them out.
They attempted to put the fire out unsuccessfully. By the time the fire department had been called and got to the scene, the house was in flames. The fire burned through the back of the house, up the wall and into the attic.
About 30 minutes after putting out the first fire, at around 6:23 a.m., another house fire was reported on the 200 block of East Winngate Drive in Martinez. This fire started under a house, burned up through the floor and into the wall. Firefighters arrived on scene in time to put out the fire.
Investigators say neither fire looks suspicious in origin.
