AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Mike Dwyer is no stranger to the folks at VFW Post 649. In fact, he's the commander here.
Dwyer already served his country once during the Vietnam War, and now he's serving it again by serving our veterans.
He says it's a matter of pride.
“I like the idea that I can sit there and make a difference for our veterans,” Dwyer said.
There's a special place in his heart for the Vietnam veterans.
“I know that during Vietnam, our troops came back and it wasn't a very warm and fuzzy feeling. And now, we've changed a lot of that,” Dwyer said.
His work here is absolutely a labor of love.
"Believe me when I say this. My heart is with my heart is with my post. My love is with my veterans,” he said.
They're almost as close to his heart as his wife is.
"He's got the biggest heart in the world,” said his wife, Joni Dwyer.
Joni and her daughter, Christine Ellison, nominated Mike for the Time To Care Award. They saw how much he does, and they wanted others to know, too.
"I never have to say, do you want me to take you to the doctor? Mike's got it covered. Do you want me to do this? Mike's got it covered. It’s like, OK is there anything he can't do? He's like a super hero, and he's got a closet with lots of capes,” Ellison said.
Sometimes Dwyer spends as much time here as he does at home. Maybe even more.
“I get a little frustrated because he's not home. I'll say, ‘Where you going?’ ‘I gotta go to the V today. Why?’ ‘The grass needs cuttin'!'"
But on this warm summer day, the grass will have to wait.
Dwyer is surrounded by family here on the outside, and on the inside ... "Oh my gosh, they're family. They're his brothers and sisters. Any one of them will call, and he's right there. It doesn't matter who it is, what time it is or what the problem is."
In a place where everybody knows his name.
