AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- With thousands still in the dark, shelters are working overtime to keep everyone comfortable.

210 people stayed at the temporary shelter in Columbia County Thursday night.

Erin Stamper and her 2-year-old daughter were among those numbers. She says, "It really didn't get bad until that night when it started getting cold, so of course, we booked a hotel, but while we were staying at the La Quinta Inn, the power went out again."

She tried to book another hotel with power, but by then, it was too late.

"We were looking on Orbitz actually, and like, as I was clicking on the hotels, they were filling up immediately," she said.

So, like hundreds of others, the temporary shelter at Patriot's Park in Columbia County is home for now.

"We were here all day yesterday and we'll probably be here again tonight," she said.

But, living at a shelter hasn't been a walk in the park. She says, "It was kind of rough. She's cranky, she's tired, hungry, and wants real food and last night they had us eating MRE's, so she wasn't exactly happy with that."

A similar story for the Kaltenbach family, who had nowhere to turn for shelter.

Ashton Kaltenbach says, "It got cold enough that we were all bundled together at the house."

They stayed at the shelter Thursday night, but now, they're packing up and heading to New Orleans with family, happy to be far from the ice and the problems that come with it.

"Hopefully, it doesn't follow us," Kaltenbach said.
