AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) --The Savannah River is used by many and for many different reasons. Some use it for business and others for pleasure.

However, one group tries to take care of it for everyone. The Savannah Riverkeeper added one improvement that's designed to help frequent visitors and maybe even attract new ones.

"Way to go Tonya!" said a visitor of the river.

He's excited about the new stairs the Savannah Riverkeepers added. The stairs were built to help river goers have easier access to the dock. Now, both young and old and can get to the dock without the risk of getting hurt.

"It's an advantage having them there," said Michael Barnes, who came to check out the new stairs.

Executive Director of the Riverkeepers Tonya Bonitatibus says the upgrade has been a long time coming and that she hopes you take advantage of it.

"This is something we've been pushing for the last six years," Bonitatibus said.

Bonitatibus says the coolest thing about all this is how little it costs.

"It's really neat because all of the stuff except for the, 2x4's and the 4x4's that I bought are all reclaimed material. So, even though the city was able to put it in for us, it really didn't cost them any money either," Bonitatibus said.

Monday was Rick Keorgilan's first visit to the river. He brought his son and his new kayak.

"It's excellent. It actually saves a lot of time and makes it easier for people to get down to the water," Keorgilan said.

The Riverkeeper is also excited about something else, a houseboat recently given to them by an anonymous donor. She says she hopes it will be ready to host tours and dinner parties soon.
