NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) — An entire South Carolina county is playing Santa Claus for some older residents who may be having a hard time this holiday season.
The Living Water Foundation and seniors at Newberry High School have teamed up to launch the Secret Santa for Seniors program, which is modeled after similar programs that provide gifts to needy children.
Starting Monday, a tree will be set up at the Wendy's on Main Street in Newberry. The tree will have ornaments with a first name and suggested gifts. People can choose an ornament, buy a gift and return it unwrapped. Volunteers will wrap and deliver the gifts by Dec. 19.
The older residents getting gifts will be chosen through referrals by local non-profits, healthcare providers and churches.
