RIDGE SPRING, S.C. (WRDW) -- It's an issue gun owners on the state line deal with everyday. Concealed weapons permits don't transfer between Georgia and South Carolina, which changes the rules of where your weapon can be every time you cross the river.

It's an issue Doley Lamb deals with every week

"I go to Augusta and the South Carolina permit is not authorized over there," said Lamb.

From his home in Johnston, things like trips to the mall, restaurants or picking up work supplies all mean crossing the state line and his concealed weapons permit isn't valid in Georgia.

"I haven't been carrying one when I cross the state line," he said. "I usually don't even take it all."

Right now, South Carolina has reciprocity with 20 states meaning your South Carolina permit is accepted there. Nearby states Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi are not on the list.

But the state of Utah may have a solution. With a Utah concealed weapons you can carry your weapon in 35 states, including Georgia and now you can now get that permit right here at home.

"I found that by getting a Utah permit as a non resident you can get additional states," said instructor Jim Braddock. "They allow up to 35 states."

Those 35 states add all nearby states to the list of places you can carry.

Braddock's been teaching concealed weapons classes in South Carolina for 18 years, but this fall he began teaching Utah classes as well.

"I went through a pretty long process to get certified to teach the Utah class," he said.

Thursday night, around 50 people showed up at the Ridge Spring Fire Department get their non resident Utah permit.

"We have to kind of put them in the mindset of being in Utah and they can apply from South Carolina to Utah," explained Braddock.

The three to four hour class does not require shooting and Braddock says its been very popular among people who live in South Carolina.

"It's a peace of mind. It really is," said Morris.

Utah is not reciprocal with South Carolina meaning you need to have a South Carolina weapons permit to carry in South Carolina.

Braddock is hoping to do a class in January. He's based in Camden, South Carolina and travels around the state to give the class.

He is doing a South Carolina permit class this Saturday morning at 9 at Mckendree United Methodist off Hwy 378 in Edgefield.
