AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Friends and family said one last goodbye to State Rep. Quincy Murphy Friday. His funeral was held at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Laney Walker Boulevard.

Well-wishers came by the busload from Atlanta to pay their respects to Murphy.

Congressman John Barrow was among the well-wishers.

"Shows that he was loved and admired in his work, and it shows that he's going to be missed," he said.

The church was packed full of those who loved and respected Murphy, an Augusta businessman, a family man and a public servant who dedicated 11 years of his life as a state representative for the Augusta area.

Thomas Settles, a former classmate of Murphy's says, "I think he recognized early on in his life that God had given him a special assignment and that was to serve."

And while there were tears, there was also joy, as loved ones celebrated a life well lived.

"He didn't do it for recognition. He did that because it was his mission, to serve. And that's what I'll remember, he taught all of us how to give and how to serve," Settles said.

Congressman Barrow says, "It didn't matter how hot the politics was in Augusta, didn't matter what was going on nationwide, he always asked about my family, and he always asked about how I was treating my staff. And that showed his concern for other people, especially the people that work for us."

So while the chapter of Murphy's life may be complete, the legacy he leaves behind will remain.
