Problems continue for Avery Pointe tenants

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The problems keep coming for Avery Pointe Apartments in Augusta. Last month, they were without water, and now, they're without street lights.

"The street lights have been out ever since a day or two after the water got turned back on," said Kesha Young, who lives at Avery Pointe.

News 12 went out to the property early Tuesday morning to see for ourselves, and all of the street lights were off, leaving the property very dark.

"It's been too dark. I actually tried to take a picture of four people walking toward me and you couldn't see nothing -- it's pitch dark," Young said.

The lack of lighting has Young worried about her kids' safety, along with her own.

"If someone gets mugged out in the parking lot, it's very hard for someone to see who it is because it's too dark," she said.

She says the area used to be very bad a few years ago, and with the lights out, she's afraid it may encourage crime again.

"People start noticing lights off, then it's another chance for them to get whoever, or do whatever," she said.

So News 12 went to work to get some answers. The phone in the rent office is disconnected, but we ran into the manager.

We asked him why the lights were out, and he said, "To be honest with you, I have no idea."

He says there's been a change of property ownership, and he isn't sure when the lights will be paid. He couldn't tell us whether they were off due to an unpaid bill or not. He also said he expected them to be back on in a week.

But he didn't have a lot of straight answers for us, which is something the tenants are getting sick of.

"It's just too much. I'm ready to move," Young said.
