Prayer rally for charged public defender brings in support

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- "You lose something, you advertise it, and the person gives it back to you, how do we have a crime?" said Tanya Jeffords, an attorney for Alexia Davis.

It is a question in the minds of many who were out at the Augusta-Richmond County Courthouse on Saturday to send up prayers for Alexia Davis.

The 31-year-old public defender was charged with a felony theft of lost or mislaid property after she found a $10,000 diamond ring at Cracker Barrel last month.

A warrant obtained by News 12 says that Davis had the ring appraised and was then offered money for it, but she did not sell it.

Later, the ring was advertised as missing by media outlets and that is when she returned it.

"We just think that basically, that's not a crime," Jeffords said.

Making her first public appearance since she turned herself in, Davis stood quietly by her family, who says she is a woman of integrity.

Mona Davis, mother of Alexia, says, "She has been taught to only have what belongs to her and not to have anything else."

Her father, "We've raised her to be exactly what she has become, a woman of impeccable taste and committed to those around her."

Others speaking at the rally, like Rev. Christopther Johnson, says there is more to the story.

"We really want to know the facts, we really wanna know both sides, if possible, of the coin," Johnson said.

But for now, her lawyers are grateful for the support of the community.

"We thank you for having this prayer rally and giving us your prayers because we need for God to put the right people in the right place at the right time who have the courage and integrity to just basically do the right thing," Jeffords said.

A preliminary trial for this case will be held on March 19.
