GROVETOWN, Ga. -- He says he was just doing his job -- but he could have saved a woman's life in the process.
Ken Bowers drives a public transit bus for Columbia County and his quick thinking and concern make him this month's Time to Care Award winner.
It's just another day on the road for public transit driver Ken Bowers.
But one afternoon this summer, things turned scary for one of his passengers.
"I picked her up to take her back home and the people at dialysis told her that maybe she should go to the hospital because they were aware she was not herself. She flatly refused," Bowers said.
Ken dropped her off at her home, but he just knew something wasn't right.
"This lady is a regular rider, she rides with us usually three times a week, so I could tell that she wasn't herself, that she wasn't well," he said. "She started up the driveway and it seems like she was not quite with it and so I told her I would come back and check on her after work."
After dropping off the bus after work, Ken came back in his own car to see how she was doing.
"When I got back to check on her, she was sitting out on the lawn in the hot sun," Bowers said.
He got her inside and finally got her to let him call for help.
"I asked her several times and I said, 'You know you're not really with it,' and she finally said, 'OK.'"
Doctors say Bowers may have saved her life.
"They told her that she would not have made it. That she would have died," he said.
But Bowers said he didn't do anything special.
"I really don't feel like a hero because I think that most people, maybe everybody, would have done the same thing," he smiled.
"We don't usually have that kind of situation, but yeah, it's just another day on the job," he said.
The woman spent five days in the hospital for a high fever and dehydration. She's out of the hospital but still undergoing treatment. After she got out, she called Bowers to thank him for his help.
