APPLING, Ga. (WRDW) -- It was a nightmare that turned into an answered prayer for retired teacher Ann Gay.
"It just makes me believe in people all over again, and I had reached the point where I didn't," Gay said.
"I saw the newscast, and it just broke my heart," Tony King said.
King is a former electrician who has worked for most of the big utility companies. As soon as he saw the story, he knew he wanted to help.
"With her on a limited income, I decided to contact Channel 12 and offer my services free of charge to her. I have the time, I have the ability. For somebody to just turn their head and walk away, I can't do that," he said.
So he spent his day walking around Gay's house checking out appliances and voltage, helping repair and replace what was lost.
"Yeah there's no voltage in here. I would have to say it fried it," King said as he closed her oven.
Other viewers stepped in and donated a TV.
"I think it's utterly amazing the way people come forward to help someone. It has really done my heart so much good," Gay said.
But electricity and appliances weren't the only thing she lost in the surge. Her spirit took a hit, too.
"I went to bed and stayed for a week I was so depressed," she said.
Seeing the community come together has helped restore not only her home, but also her heart.
"It's hard, but this really has restored my faith in mankind," Gay said.
While King's generosity started with checking her wiring for free, he's given her something money can't buy.
"Peace of mind. Rest assured when I leave, that's what she's gonna have," he said.
"Just thank you to everyone for all the help and especially to Channel 12," Gay said.
The electrician says all her wiring looks good, which means many of her appliances will be able to be repaired.
The outpouring of support continues. News 12 received a call on Thursday from a local appliance store that wants to donate an oven to her.
