AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- This year, the presidential inauguration fell on the same day we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Here in Augusta, and across the country, many spent the day helping others as part of the National Day of Service.

More than two dozen volunteers spent the day helping the needy, taking approximately 2,400 bags to the Garden City Rescue Mission.

Janice Cahoon, 73, was the oldest volunteer there. Cahoon says she remembers the days of segregation and King's battle.

"Dr. King's vision is being worked out, and yes, I believed we would see a black president one day," she said.

Cody Jennings, who also volunteered, says that King's dream is being seen in Washington.

"To have a black president because we've never had one, and I hope we have one again," he said. "I'd never thought I'd see a black president myself."

David Nguyen says that having a black president is historic, but King's dream was even bigger than the White House.

"He transcended race, gender, age and all that," Nguyen said. "He's a global icon, not just a black icon as people liked to say."
