Local soup kitchen helps in downtown Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Master's Table has been serving daily meals in downtown Augusta for 30 years.

John Landers is one of the many who got a plate of turkey and stuffing this Christmas. Landers has been living on the streets for nearly four years and even though he has no home, he's glad he made it to the Master's Table.

"I didn't have nothing for myself, so it gave me somewhere to come, to get something to eat, come sit down and be in good company," he said.

Marilyn McKinnie has been managing the center for almost three years and while feeding the homeless is her main job, she knows a lot of people need help during this season.

"Just because people work, you still don't know their circumstances. They might decided whether they need to buy food today or buy medicine. So, if anyone wants to come down here for a meal, we serve them," McKinnie said.

Almost 400 people came on Tuesday to receive, what maybe for some, their only meal of the day. It took almost 70 volunteers to prepare for Tuesday's meal.

And while the plates were special, McKinnie is always ready to help those who are in need.

"We are open seven days a week, including all holidays -- 365 days out of the year," McKinnie said.

While Landers doesn't have the material things many others are grateful for this Christmas, he is grateful for waking up today.

"I'm still alive. I've been blessed. I've got a good family. They do want they can but they are having trouble themselves. That's about it." Landers said.
