NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- A church that started with a small group of people has now grown into a congregation of over 1,000 members. The growth in membership has led the church to outgrow its current space.

On Monday through Friday, North Augusta High School is filled with students, but on Sunday, the school's auditorium is used for church. True North has been meeting in at the high school for a couple of years, but now, they are getting ready to move.

"I'm really stoked. I'm glad that we won't be know as the church at the high school anymore," said a church member.

Cullen Grady joined the church a few years ago and says while they are getting a new building, the church has always had a home.

"I think a church is a group of people who share the same beliefs. I think we've always had a home. Our home is not here, our home is in heaven," Grady said.

While many in the church agree with Grady, others, like Christina McDiarmind, are ready for the move.

"I am like super ecstatic. I am pumped. I can't not wait," McDiarmind said.

While the groundbreaking was on Sunday, Pastor Steve Davis says, McDiarmind may have to wait a little longer.

"The builders tell me it will be 14 to 16 months and we are hoping we'll be able to do that in 16 months," Davis said.

More than a thousand people showed up for the groundbreaking. Pastor Davis started things off by knocking the last tree down. Members then wrote messages on balloons and released them to the sky.

Pastor Davis says it will cost the church close to $8 million to build its new facility. They plan to build a state-of-the-art worship center and a kids' facility. He says the community is always welcome to visit and they currently have four services to make it easy for people.
