AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Instead of the hectic holiday hustle and bustle, some families are looking to skies.
Mike Kerberlis with Southern Travels says they see a lot of last-minute stuff in their office around this time of year.
Kerbalis says even though booking in November is considered last minute, it's not too late to plan for a holiday getaway.
"Schedules are so iffy. Not sure if they are gonna go visit relatives or if they aren't," he said. "I think there are still opportunities out there for people in between Christmas and New Year's."
If you're trying to save cash, stick close to home instead of traveling overseas. Kerbalis also recommends avoiding resort destinations because demand is up and they usually don't put on sales this time of the year.
"People with budgets you are basically looking at departures into the Caribbean because that is not a lot of travel time," explained Kerbalis.
If you're on a tight budget, be flexible. Southern Travels tried looking for a flight to New York during Christmas. The first one they found cost around $500. The second one was nearly $200 cheaper because of the time of day the flights took off.
"A lot of business travelers come home on Fridays," he said. "So if you travel Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, it's a little lighter."
You can also save some money by using reward points or sky miles for your trip.
"We look at what they are trying to do and we try to equate the value of their miles toward what they would spend financially in dollars," Kerbalis added.
It may not always be worth the trade, so do some research or save your miles for another trip down the road. Online travel sites like FareCompare.com can search different travel websites for you.
