AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Saturday was the grand opening for the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Augusta.

Salvation Army Administrator Cpt. Todd Mason said it was a very rewarding day.

"After almost seven years of planning, drawings, meetings and communication with the community, it's grand opening day," Mason said.

Before Saturday afternoon, more than 2,000 people had stopped by.

The morning started with a celebrity dodge ball game: Team Government vs. Team Media featuring News 12's Katie Beasley. Team Government won two out of three games.

Some of the CSRA's local officials were the first to slide down the 28-foot tall water slide at the aquatic center. GreenJackets players were also there signing hats for the little ones. Later in the afternoon, Olympic swimmer Kristy Kowal delivered a motivational speech and swam in a relay race with local youth swim team members.

"There's a lot going on today," Mason said. "We have a full programming buffet where people can come to the facility and see all the program elements that is available to them on a regular basis here."

The facility provides programs from fitness to worship all under one roof. Many on Saturday were taking advantage of those memberships.

The Kroc Center is located at Broad Street and Crawford Avenue in Augusta.
