Homes For Our Troops hosting 'volunteer day' for disabled veteran in Evans

Friday, May 18, 2012

EVANS, Ga. -- A disabled veteran is just weeks away from moving into his brand new home, thanks to Homes For Our Troops.

You may remember Sgt. First Class Sean Gittens and his family. The inside of their new Evans home is almost complete, but they need your help to get the yard just right.

On Saturday, Homes For Our Troops is hosting a landscaping volunteer day.

The Gittens family first made headlines when their Knob Hill neighborhood was less than welcoming. A local veteran donated the new land and about a year later, they're almost ready to move in.

"It makes me feel good to know that there are so many people supporting us and so many people want to help," said Sharon Gittens, Sean's wife.

Volunteers will get started around 8:30 a.m. and go most of the day. We're told four local nurseries donated all the flowers and shrubs.

The home is in Evans on the 5000 block of North Tubman Road.

"Put on your jeans and your T-shirts and come on out," Gittens said.
