AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Gay's Christmas Tree Farm opened for business on Friday, and business is already booming. At the farm, trees are being sold by the minute.

Suzanne Mathis, a fourth-year customer, purchases a tree the day after Thanksgiving as a tradition.

"It's always been a family tradition of my family to put a tree up the day after Thanksgiving. So that's something that I've brought along into my marriage from when I was a child," Mathis said.

While looking for that special tree to keep her tradition going, Gay's Christmas Tree Farm awakens Mathis' holiday spirit.

"I am excited, it's our tradition, we ride the hayride, we always get boiled peanuts and hot chocolate and have a really good time," she said.

It's the 11th year selling trees for the owner of Gay's Christmas Tree Farm Matthew Gay, who says harvesting and growing trees is a long process.

"I have to trim them twice a year to get that Christmas tree shape," he said.

But he doesn't mind, as he finds joy in helping others keep their tradition.

"Growing Christmas trees has to be a hobby because that's exactly what it is, a lot of work and you know, I pay for my equipment and all that but you don't make a lot of money at it, but I enjoy the people coming out. I'm a child at heart and I like Christmas, and of course, I do the Christmas trees and I like seeing families come out," he said.

For Mathis, she wants to pass on this unique tradition to her loved ones.

"I have a son that is 6 years old, and I am trying to set some family traditions that he can follow along with his family as he gets older," she said.

It takes Gay four or five years to get trees to a sellable size. He says he doesn't mind seeing his trees get cut down because he's knows he'll plant more.

Gay's Christmas Tree Farm sold about 75 to 100 trees on Friday.
