BELVEDERE, S.C. -- Hopefully you remembered to move your clocks forward an hour Sunday for Daylight Saving Time, but did you also remember to change out your smoke alarm batteries?
Firefighters say it's a great idea to get into the habit of changing those batteries about twice a year, and they have some creative ways to encourage people to remember.
"If their smoke detectors are up and working, then we provide their food for free. Dinner's on us," said Gene Hart, area supervisor for Domino's Pizza.
You read that correctly. Pizzas were on their way to homes in Belvedere, along with firefighters.
"It's the best time to remember to change your smoke detectors -- everybody's got to remember to change their clocks, so it's a good time while you're changing the time on your clock to change your battery, too," said Chief Chad Hyler of the Belvedere Fire Department.
Anyone from Belvedere that ordered takeout from the North Augusta Domino's between 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday was greeted with the delivery man and a fire truck full of firefighters.
"We urge everyone to have one, the more that we can come out and contact and supply people, the better off we feel at night," Chief Hyler said.
So if you didn't have smoke detectors when the firemen came to your house to check, the firemen gave them to you for free.
And if all of your smoke detectors worked, your order was free. The Kata family was lucky enough to earn a free meal.
It was a nice reminder to check a gadget that just may save your life.
"It's so much easier our job is to get there and know that you are out safely than it is for us having to find you," Hyler said. "Putting out the fire is one thing, but if we know everyone's safe and secure outside, it makes our jobs a little bit easier."
This is the second time the Belvedere Fire Department has teamed up with Domino's to check smoke detectors. The first time was back in the fall when we turned our clocks back an hour. Domino's sponsors the event with fire departments nationwide.
