AIKEN, S.C. -- "I put some glue on it and sticks and put a leaf on it."
And just like that, Eli Fields had himself an airplane. He made it Tuesday, the day of his birthday.
"I'm 4," he said.
But the birthday boy didn't get to spend his special day at home with his Legos ... or his chainsaw ... or his new tent.
"I had to go to the hospital," he said.
Eli's mom, Paige Lewis, was at work when she got the call.
"I immediately rushed home and saw him in the ambulance, which tore my heart up to see him strapped up in an ambulance," she said.
They were on their way home when, she says, another car rear-ended them at 55 miles an hour.
It ended up knocking their truck across two lanes of traffic and onto the dirt road they were turning on.
She says the other driver was fine. Eli's dad had only a small bruise, but Eli cut his head. He ended up needing one staple, but as he was being loaded onto the ambulance, an iPhone captured a miraculous picture.
Eli's airplane suddenly isn't just an airplane ... it looks more like a cross.
"My dad passed away when my son was 8 months old, and every year, I'm blessed with some sort of miracle on Eli's birthday," Paige said.
The truck was totaled. Paige says it was a miracle that neither Eli nor her husband were seriously hurt.
"Whatever your religion is and whatever you believe, in my heart, somebody was there watching over my family," she said.
