AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A Beech Island family who lost everything in a fire is getting some help with Christmas. A spark in the dryer last Thursday caused their whole house to go up in flames. Now, their church is helping the McClary family rebuild just in time for Christmas.
Along with Christmas gifts for all three kids, the McClarys received hundreds in gift certificates along with a $2,000 check to help cover expenses.
Dr. Michael Mitchell, pastor of Restoration Ministries, says that helping is what the church family is called to do.
"It's one thing to have a church family when everything is going well in my life and we're praising and coming to church. But now, when the chips are down, I need to see my church family be a real church," Mitchell said.
McClary's wife couldn't be at the service this morning due to work. However, McClary says they are thankful for what everyone is doing for them.
"There's been so much support coming in and to see what the church did here today. We're just blessed to be surrounded by good people that care," McClary said.
While today's help was a lot, Dr. Mitchell says the church family still has a lot more to do for them.
"We want to get them somewhere where they can be stable until their home is finished, renovated, or they get a new one," Mitchell said.
Even though they've lost all their material possessions, McClary says they didn't lose everything.
"Take care of your family. Love your family. Cherish your family. Because the material things can be replaced. But of course, if we would have lost anybody, that would have made the situation worse," he said.
