NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- When Candice Elam woke up this morning, she wasn't expecting this.

"People that have been bringing us stuff, I'm like overwhelmed, I can't believe it," Elam said. "It makes me feel good, people care."

There was donation after donation -- all for her family and the three others who lost their homes in a fire at an apartment building on Conifer Court.

"With people like this and a community like this, you can't go wrong," she said.

But for Elam, it's more about what her daughter would not have today.

"She's having a good day, she's better," she said.

Tamia Timber turned 7 years old on Thursday -- just one day after she lost everything, including her home, clothes and toys.

But her worst day was followed by one of her best. There was Tinkerbell, cotton candy and her own birthday cake.

"I can't believe how the community came together like they did," said Mary Montgumry, who manages the apartment building.

It was a helping hand she got to see for herself as her four tenants are getting back on their feet.

"We've had clothes and food and money donations and people wanting to give," Montgumry said.

But the one thing she wants more than anything for her residents is a new place they can call home.

"The main thing they need is a roof over their head, they need clothes and food, and the community has been providing that, but mainly they're going to need a place to stay," she told News 12.

She worries about what will happen when the Red Cross stops covering the hotel bill.

"All I can do is take it one step at a time and stay focused," Elam said.

Instead, she's focusing on her daughter and getting through another day.
