EVANS, Ga. -- Listen up aspiring musicians and performers: This could be your chance to be discovered. Columbia County is looking for artists for its first-ever "Amateur Series."
More than two dozen performers have already signed up for the competition, and for some, it could be a chance of a lifetime.
Nikki Boner, 20, says music is her hobby, which is why she's thrilled to audition.
"The local music scene is in Augusta. It's not in Columbia County. Regardless of where you're from, you sort of have to go downtown if you want to show off your music," Boner said.
Organizers say they hope the competition will give local performers a place to showcase their hidden talents.
"They've been really, really excited. There was one girl in particular, I just remember, we were telling her about the package and telling her what we were doing and she got all teary-eyed she was like, 'Oh my gosh this is like a musician's dream,'" said Calie Cook, the administrative coordinator for the Rental Facilities and Venues Department in Columbia County.
A dream for her, and a great chance for you to enjoy some live entertainment in Evans.
"I'm so sick of hearing ... there's not anything to do in Columbia County. So, we're showing everybody that yeah, we have something going on and we hope to do it every single year," Cook said.
Sandy Boner, manager for the Rental Facilities and Venues Department in Columbia County, said this is what the musicians have wanted all along.
"They just never had a way to get it, so this is their opportunity to show us and to shine," she said.
The series is set for every Thursday or Friday this summer. There will be one winner each month and then a grand prize winner at the end of August.
The winner walks away with a "launch package," which includes a photo session, music gift cards, eight hours of studio time, a designed website and a video about them.
If you want to apply to audition, go to www.savannahrapids.com and click on the "blog" button at the bottom of the page. Then click the tab that says "talent corner."
