GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW) -- It's been a year of growth for Columbia County and it's a trend that's expected to continue. That message was clear Thursday's State of the Community Address.

"We have so many wonderful things going on. {We were] named recently the 45th fastest growing county in the nation," said Tammy Shepherd, President of the Columbia County Chamber.

Since 2010 Columbia County has added 7-thousand people. Shepherd said," We've been growing at 6.1 percent where the state average is 2.4%."

Thursday night community leaders came together to talk about what it's meant for the area and what the future holds.

From the sheriff's office to the school system, the board of commissioners and more all talked about their plans.

Grovetown city planner Frank Neal says for them it's meant new business and for the future a new downtown.

He said, "basically go into our city core and redevelop a lot of the existing blighted properties and at the same time create a true downtown city core for the city."

Ft. Gordon's Garrison Commander Col. Sam Anderson says this year's had it's challenges with sequestration and those challenges will continue, but the potential of growth makes the future a bit brighter.

"None of those decisions have been made, but we are conducting prudent planning in the hopes that the department of defense makes some decisions that do positively impact Ft. Gordon and the community," said Col. Anderson

He emphasized not getting too ahead of ourselves in the excitement. He says there are still a lot of factors that are going into those decisions, but he says they are hoping for the best.
