AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Columbia County Schools came together to celebrate the spirit of Olympic competition on Friday.

As the athletes walked through the hallways, the excitement was subdued. But outside, the excitement got turned up a notch.

Steven Cummings, principal at Columbia Middle School, says everyone at his school is treated the same.

"Everybody has different challenges, and it's very important to me to let all students know that they are equally important," Cummings said.

On this day, kids with limitations are embraced.

Obioma Ekechukwu, father of a sixth grader in the Special Olympics, says it's good to have a day where everyone can relate.

"When you see somebody who's in need, don't walk by them," he said. "Ask them if they need something and help them out. Give 'em a hand."

And that's what days like this are all about.

Franklin Reeder, a student at Columbia Middle, earned first place in the long jump.

Reeder led the crowd with the pledge and afterwards played it cool, just like any star would.

"I feel a little bit happy here," he said.

It was a day to celebrate all these Special Olympians and embrace them for who they are.

Friday's event at Greenbrier High School lasted almost the whole day, with kids competing in everything from long jumps to runs.
