Church celebrates true meaning of Memorial Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Mann Memorial Methodist Church is a small church that's hosted a Memorial Day service for the past nine years.

Pastor Michael Holt, who has been at the church for the past two years, says the Memorial Day service is one of his favorite times of year at the church, but to continue this tradition for another nine years, they need more members.

"We would love to see people come joins us and worship -- do things like this -- the Memorial Day celebration," Holt said.

Even though the church membership has declined, current members were determined to take their celebration from the inside to the outside. The church's Teacher's Garden serves as a reminder during Memorial Day of the sacrifice many have made for the country. The man responsible for making the memorial so organized says he did it for one reason in particular.

"When you get into something like this, we need to be as perfect as we can get it because we got a lot of people that we are thinking about that's already passed away, and if their families come and see a shotty job, they are not going to like it," said Julian Florie.

Over 130 crosses cover the small piece of grass in front of the church, and even though this is a small way to give thanks, Florie says it's got to be perfect. He says it takes a long piece of rope to measure the 22 inches needed to make sure the crosses stay. He says all that detail is needed for one reason.

"That lines it up perfectly," Florie said.

So, while many of us celebrate the holiday, this church asks you to take some time to make it a sacred day, too.

The church also host a program where they feed vets once a month at their church. They've been doing it for the past 40 years.
