AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The hot weather is bringing out bugs, and it's even worse than they've been in years. Right now, we're at the peak of the season, and pest control experts don't think it's going to end anytime soon.

They say all the bugs are pretty bad this year but especially the ants.

That's what homeowner Bill Street has been seeing around his home.

"Mainly ants and just the water bugs," he said. "It's just that time of year. It's hot and they're gonna be out."

Street and his family live in North Augusta. They take precautions to keep the bugs away but say with the heat this year, they're still seeing them.

"We have regular pest control. They come quarterly and they do a great job and it helps a lot to have that, but with the heat, and this time of year is really hot, so we're seeing more and more," he said.

Chris Corbett with Brunson Pest Control says the mild winter and the area's severe drought don't help.

"They're looking for moisture and anything they can eat," he said.

He says this summer has been the worst in a while.

"[We've had] way more calls this summer than last summer," Corbett said.

Most of those calls have been for ants.

"Ants are the worst," Corbett said. "We have way more than normal, above average for sure."

He says it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon.

"We're pretty much in the peak of it. It's just gonna last a little bit longer than normal until we get some really cold cold weather," Corbett said.

So what can you do as a homeowner?

"Keep trash cans away from the house, keep tree limbs off the house, keep mulch pine straw as thin as possible. Don't get it real thick, creates shade and cover for the bugs," Corbett said.

You can also call a pest control company. They say quarterly sprayings every three months can help keep the bugs down and Street agrees.

"Having a pest control company does help a lot," he said.

Bottom line, with the amount of bugs out there this summer, take lots of precautions but be prepared to still see some bugs around the house.
