AUGUSTA, Ga. -- There were a lot of smiles Sunday at the Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center.

Olivia Hannah and Dujuane Green welcomed a baby girl to the family at 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.

The proud mother rocks her new born baby girl, but it's the last thing she expected to be doing on New Year's Day.

Olivia had a quiet New Year's Eve planned. She was just going to hang out at home with her 11-month-old son, Zion, and her best friend, Camethia Jenkins.

But that all changed when, Hannah said, "I just kept feeling contractions back to back."

Her due date wasn't until Jan. 22, but those plans all changed late Saturday night.

"I was like, 'Oh yeah, you going to need to go to the hospital,'" Jenkins said.

So they called the baby's father and rushed her to the GHS Medical Center.

Jenkins had only one piece of advice for her friend.

"Tell her to hold out 'til 12 o'clock so we can have a New Year's baby. And then about 12:40 he texted my phone and said she done had the baby."

Arianna Green, weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces, came into the world at 12:30 a.m.

"Couldn't do nothing but smile," her proud father said.

The thought of their baby being the first of the new year hadn't even crossed Hannah's mind.

"It was a shock to me," she said. "They kept telling me she was gonna come."

And Green was just as surprised.

"I didn't think she was gone come this early," he said. "Especially not on the first, so I'm really happy."

But Millie Lopez, the labor and delivery nurse on duty New Year's Eve, thought that Hannah and Green's baby might be the first.

"I told them, I said, 'Let's see if this is going to be the first baby for the new year.'"

And when she heard the big news, she said, "I was so excited. I said, 'Oh my gosh! We have the first baby of the new year!'"

Both mom and baby are doing just fine. They also got a big gift basket with lots of goodies from the staff.

We checked around with other hospitals, and there have been a couple of babies since Arianna, but she was actually the first in Augusta by a pretty large margin. The second baby of 2012 wasn't delivered until 9:37 a.m. Sunday at University hospital.
