AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Oscar Pistorius was the first person to ever compete in Olympic track with a prosthetic leg. He has inspired millions of people around the world, including one family in Augusta.
Like many kids her age, Anna Gentry is a joyful little girl.
"She is the most amazing little girl," said her mother, Lisa Gentry. "She just draws people to her like crazy."
But unlike most kids her age, Anna has one difference. She wears a prosthetic leg after she was born with Fibular Hemimelia.
"Her condition was so rare that the doctors at the hospital had never seen a case -- or heard of it really -- so it took us a few months before we found out what was actually wrong with her leg," Gentry said.
Five months ago her parents made the difficult decision to amputate her leg.
"In the beginning it's so hard because you just think about how you're child's different, but now seeing her with her prosthesis and seeing her learn to walk and start to do the things all the other children are doing, and it's like I don't even think about the fact that she has a disability," Gentry said.
Anna has the same disability as Oscar Pistorius, the first man to compete in Olympic track with a prosthetic leg.
Gentry says she and her family watched all of his events.
"Watching Oscar in the Olympics has been awesome," she said. "It's like amazing every time I see him the way that he has persevered despite his disability."
Perseverance that's worth more to Gentry's family than a gold medal.
"He has this saying that he always says. He says, 'Having a disability doesn't have to be a disadvantage,'" Gentry said. "I love that he's showing that to the world in a way that people are responding to it. It's just such an inspiration to me to raise my daughter kind of in that little legacy that he started."
A legacy he's leaving throughout the world and in Augusta, as a little girl takes her first steps.
Gentry says she loves his point of view that it's just a difference and not disability. She says Anna will grow up knowing who Pistorius is and all that he has accomplished.
