Musician may take on Augusta, Ga. home restoration

Wycliffe Gordon

July 12, 2010

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- Renowned jazz trombonist and composer Wycliffe Gordon, a native of Waynesboro, says he's moving to Augusta and is talking with the city's Housing and Community Development Department about rehabbing a 109-year-old bungalow.

Gordon, who graduated from Butler High School in Augusta, went on to back trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and then front globe-trotting ensembles of his own.

Gordon says he intends to move his base of operations from a brownstone apartment in New York's Harlem neighborhood to the Pine Street house, which would be his primary residence, complete with a practice studio.

The renovation would part of a projected $99.3 million revitalization of Augusta's Laney-Walker and Bethlehem neighborhoods.
