Senate holds field hearing at Augusta VA

August 28, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.--- Augusta has a lot of offer when it comes to caring for America's wounded warriors. And with a proven track record of success, a U.S. Senate subcommittee came to see what more Augusta can offer.

Senator Johnny Isakson, chairing a field hearing of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, something that's never happened here before...
John Goldman, the Associate Director of the Uptown V.A. told us,
"We're proud to be a part of this... its the first time the senate has ever brought its V.A. Committee here."

And it's no accident that it happened here at the Uptown V.A., home of the only Active Duty Rehab Unit inside a V.A. facility.

Among those here, the commanding general of Eisenhower and the commanding general of Walter Reed.
They also talked about the care of American troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among them--- Specialist Jason Capps, who told the committee,
"On June 10th an Iraqi suicide bomber drove a truck under our bridge carrying the equivalent of a 4000 pound bomb and detonated it..."

Specialist Capps... a U.S. Army combat medic was among 7 injured that day. He lost 3 of his friends.

"As for me...Capps said, my government has done its very best to make sure I had a full recovery--- every soldier deserves that."
The brace he was wearing is to help him heal 2 spinal fractures and 6 breaks in his pelvis.

About 350 people heard testimony about the work going on here.
The testimony will all go back to washington where the full committee will see it.

We also want to let you know that our own Laurie Ott was asked by Senator Isakson to testify about specialist Crystal Davis. Laurie has been following Crystal's story- a wounded warrior who lost her leg and came to the active duty rehab facility at the Uptown V.A.

Kudos to Laurie Ott and Doug Barnard for leading the CSRA Wounded Warrior program, this is a great idea. . Please post the phone number and web site so those who want to help can get in touch. I am a service disabled veteran, and these men and women being treated at the V.A. are our fellow veterans and we all need to do everything we can to see they get the best care now. I welcome and honor my fellow wounded warriors who are being treated in Augusta and would like to personally thank you for your selfless service.
