AUGUSTA, GA--More people are out of a job after the month of May. That's when more than 30, 000 people filed unemployment claims across the state, and Augusta took one of the biggest hits. Augusta is number three on the list of Georgia cities. News 12's research shows several factors could be to blame.

Cynthia Tolbert is looking for work.

"I have to find me a job and see what's out there." She said.

Cynthia lost her job in manufacturing, and her fiance recently lost job in construction. Department of Labor statistics say those, and other service industries in the Augusta area, are on the decline and don't need as many workers.

However, there could be more to the recent unemployment numbers than a changing job market. Some jobs, from caddies to crossing guards like Karla Apple, end when the seasons change.

"The last day of school is your last day. Basically, you're here to get the kids across the road." She said.

Representatives with the Department of Labor say about 450 seasonal jobs, like Karla's, come to an end this time of year. The numbers show it. In April, about 1,300 were out of work. In May, that number jumped to almost 1,500. But, the Department of Labor says whether it's the changing seasons, or the changing labor market, they're here to help people like Cynthia.

"They've been workin' with us, trying to set up different interviews...and tryin' to place us on different jobs." She said.

The Department of Labor helps people like her by finding out their qualifications, working with their resumes, and letting them know about opportunities. If you need help, you can stop by the department of labor at 601 Greene Street.

Department of Labor research says jobs in retail, construction, bookkeeping, and secretarial work are on the decline in this area.

The fields growing the most are data analysis, computer engineering, special education, and medical careers.
