AUGUSTA, Ga.---An outdoor market re-opens tomorrow in Augusta. The Saturday Market on Broad is back, and this year organizers are on their own.

It's springtime, and people are always looking for something to do on Saturdays. The Saturday Market on Broad has been a popular choice for several years, but after being cut from the city's budget, organizers had to quickly raise the money to keep it going.

"Every year, it gets bigger and better, and this will be one of those bigger and better years," said coordinator Jessica Stephens.

For years, the open-air market on McCartan Street has been a special spot on Saturdays in the spring--a place to find cookbooks and crafts, flowers, produce, and more.

"You can get something to eat, buy fresh produce, get your child's face painted, listen to great music, and visit with neighbors," said Margaret Woodard of the Downtown Development Authority. "It's a fun time."

After Augusta commissioners stripped all the money for the project during recent budget cuts, the market's future was unclear. So the DDA got to work looking for sponsors.

"We've raised about $20,000 in cash sponsorships and about 45 to 50 in kind, so with vendor fees coming in, the market will be on this year," Woodard said.

Liz Daniels runs the florist shop on McCartan Street. She's glad the market is re-opening because it means more customers are coming through.

"They get a chance to browse through our shop and see what we have here," Liz said. "It helps our business, because a lot of people know that we are here."

Organizers tell us that each week, there will be a different theme with different local restaurants.
