Hundreds of families in need got Thanksgiving dinner thanks to Augusta volunteers who spent their holiday helping others, preparing and delivering the annual Dinner of Love.

The generous helpers hand delivered meals to those in need, bringing good company and Thanksgiving dinner.

Volunteer Becky McCreedy and her family spent the morning making house calls.

"We'll hopefully get meals to people who might not otherwise have any food, visit, and pray with people that might not have any company, family, and prayers today," McCreedy told News 12.

Cooks like John Porley and his son Nathan got the food ready to go.

"We're here to serve the community and show them there's people out here that care about them no matter what circumstance they're in--there's people that care and there's places they can get help," Porley said.

On the serving line, more volunteers packaged the turkey, green beans, and sweet potatoes. Then the meals were ready to go.

But volunteer Kristen Rust says it's not just about the food.

"Other people...they're desperate, they're lonely, they want some conversation, and we might be the only people they see on Thanksgiving," she said.

That's why volunteers like Becky are visiting people.

"This gives us the chance to go out with our families and our children and bless other people, serve other people."

The volunteers started Wednesday at 7, and they continued to work in shifts until the last meal was delivered.

The Dinner of Love is a yearly event serving needy people across the Augusta area. The Serve Augusta ministry is made up of almost a dozen churches and organizations from across the area.
