102-year-old Augusta Dr. 'Curly' Watson dies

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The nation's oldest known physician died Wednesday morning.

University Hospital confirmed 102-year-old Dr. Walter "Curly" Watson died overnight after he was hospitalized for a fall at his home over the weekend.

Dr. Watson was the former Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University Hospital. It is believed he delivered more than 15,000 babies in the area. CBS News did a story on Dr. Watson in 2010.

Dr. Watson was also the oldest living graduate of The Citadel.

On his 100th birthday, he was recognized as the oldest known working physician in the United States. He's also the namesake of University Hospital’s W.G. Watson, M.D. Women’s Center, dedicated in 1999.
