EVANS, Ga. -- Instead of getting gifts for his birthday, a 10-year-old from Evans asked for dog food to donate to the Columbia County Animal Shelter.
Aaron Mims rescued his dog, Arrow, back in May from the shelter and says he really wanted to take all the animals home.
When he learned most of the dogs are fed with donations, he decided he would help the shelter by donating some food for the dogs.
Last month, at his birthday party, Aaron helped to collect about 10 bags of dog food.
"I decided to do it for my birthday because I adopted a dog and I thought, since I couldn't adopt all the rest, I should just give them dog food," Aaron said.
Aaron's mother, Tanya Mims, said it was a very sweet idea.
"It's very nice for him to learn how to share and care about other things other than himself," she said.
Aaron says it made him feel "very good" to help out the dogs. Aaron's mother says they plan on collecting the dog food again for his 11th birthday and making it an annual tradition to give back.
