AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Doctors Hospital recently performed its 1000th robotic surgery. The hospital is the first in the area to have completed that many and is adding different types of surgeries to the list all the time.
The most recent surgery they have added to that list is bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery. They have just started doing the surgery at Doctors Hospital.
Vernitta Moore was one of the first people in the area to have that surgery using a robot.
"I had heard about the robot, but knowing what it was gonna do and how it was gonna be -- I had no clue about it at all," Moore said.
When her doctor, Mike Blaney, called and said they'd like to use the robot, she said, "Why not?"
"If he was comfortable with it, then I was comfortable with it, because I had faith and trust in him," she said.
Doctors Hospital is the first in the CSRA to do robotic bariatric surgery and Moore was one of their first cases.
"Technology is changing every day so you just have to learn about the procedure. Learn what the robot's going to do and what's your benefits from the robot and what's the doctors' benefits from it," she said.
"[It] gives us a degree of control and a sense of safety that gives our patients an advantage," Blaney said.
Using the robot has a lot of benefits both for the patient and the surgeon, including very little scarring and a shorter recovery time.
"Since my surgery I can say everything is fine. I feel better, I have more energy, I'm able to go all day," Moore said.
A big change from before and one Moore says was a necessity for her two kids.
"It's not fair to the kids that because of my weight I'm not able to get up and function," she said. "Because they have a life, too, so I needed to make a change so I could be able to be with them and help them out and support them."
Since her surgery, Moore has lost almost 40 pounds and she's expected to lose around 100 in the first year.
The surgery is very helpful but as with any weight loss, it's not permanent. It still takes a healthy lifestyle to keep it off.
Doctors Hospital has been doing robotic surgeries for four years now. They introduced it back in 2008 and can perform surgeries in about seven different areas using the robot.
