The Vita Food Product Company is recalling 8,088 packages of smoked salmon because of possible listeria contamination.
The 4-ounce Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoke Atlantic Nova Salmon has been voluntarily recalled by the company.
Listeria can cause serious and even fatal infections for young children, elderly people and others with weak immune systems.
For healthy people, high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea may be symptoms of the contamination.
So far, no confirmed illnesses or complaints have been reported.
The packages were sold at Publix stores nationwide including locations in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. Other stores affected included Meijer (Midwest), Vons (California), Winn Dixie stores (Florida) and Edgefield Produce (Chicago).
The recall only pertains to packages with a specific "sell by" date and code. The "sell by" date and code of DEC 15 2011 01961B is centered in the window on the front of each package.
The company is asking that any person who has purchased the product with this "sell by" date and code to call 1-800-989-8482 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Central) Monday through Friday.
