AUGUSTA, Ga. -- With the new year, comes new babies.
It was a big honor for one local family to have the first local new year's baby. For the first time in recent years, Doctors Hospital played host to the extra special delivery.
"Smile for the camera," said Gweneth Francis-Elzie, showing off the CSRA'S first baby of the new year.
"We thought I was gonna have a baby that I could use as taxes this year," she laughed. "But he had other plans. He came this morning."
While the world was watching the ball drop, the Augusta woman was in labor at Doctors Hospital.
"I had other things on my mind," she said. "It's been great but yesterday just seems like a big fog because I pushed for a little while and ended up with a C-section."
Little Eric John Antonio Elzie was born at 1:41 a.m., the area's first baby born into 2013.
"I was not expecting that. They hinted at it last night, but we really weren't sure that it would happen. I just wanted him safe and healthy is all I really wanted," Francis-Elzie said.
It's the first child for her and husband, Shawn Elzie.
"He's just a bundle of joy already," he said.
And the Elzies aren't the only ones celebrating this New Year's Day.
Parents Steve and Faith Ryan welcomed their son, Cooper Ryan, at 2:16 a.m. They already have him decked out in Notre Dame gear.
Over at the Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center, they welcomed their first baby at 6:20 a.m. Nathaniel Roman Olguin came a little earlier than planned and is only 33 weeks old. It's the third child for proud parents Stacy and Rocky Olguin of Grovetown.
They will share the same birthday and some pretty cool stories.
"I'm going to tell him I thought you were going to be a tax write-off but that didn't work out, and then I just knew he was so special so definitely being the first baby of the CSRA is a great thing for him and for us," Francis-Elzie said.
Francis-Elzie is actually a doctor herself, and said it was a little weird to be on the other side as a patient.
