THOMSON, Ga. -- The next step in the creation of a University Health Care System hospital in Thomson has been completed. Thursday, the University Health Inc. Board approved a memorandum of understanding.

Now, both parties will work on an agreement that will be sent to the Attorney General’s office for review. Once he approves the agreement, University Health Inc. will become the owner and operator of the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

In a statement from University Health Care System, President and CEO James R. Davis says the health care reform and deficit reduction initiatives in Washington are making it increasingly difficult for small hospitals to survive in these economically challenging times, and University is in a position to be able to help ensure high-quality health care in McDuffie County into the future.

"The greater Thomson community certainly needs a hospital that can support itself and provide great care to its citizens," Mr. Davis said. "This collaboration between University Health Care System and McDuffie Regional Medical Center will make it possible for McDuffie County to have an economically viable hospital they can trust to provide the care they need close to home."

The agreement will provide for the operation of the existing facility and the expansion of other services. It will also provide for the construction of a new hospital which will be at no expense to taxpayers. The plan is to offer employment to all qualified employees at McDuffie Regional with comparable wages, benefits and maintenance of seniority.

The agreement could become operational as early as January 2012.
