WAYNESBORO, Ga.---An investigation is underway into what caused a nuclear reactor at Plant Vogtle to shutdown Wednesday evening. The reactor has been out of service since.

Southern Company Spokesperson Alyson Fuqua reported today that Unit 1 automatically shut down at 5:34 p.m. on Wednesday. She says the plant systems all performed as designed and safely shut the unit down.

An investigation into the automatic shutdown is underway. Fuqua says once the root cause is identified a repair and return to service plan will be implemented.

Southern Nuclear say they made all the appropriate notifications to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They go on to say the safety and health of the public is Southern Nuclear's top priority and there were at no time impacts to public health or safety.

Southern Company is not saying when Unit 1 will return to full service, but Unit 2 continues to operate at 100 percent power.

Plant Vogtle is 26 miles southeast of Augusta.
