AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The bad guys have a new scam targeting senior citizens and it's affecting folks in the CSRA.

Gigi Turner with the Better Business Bureau of the CSRA says she received lots of calls from seniors in the Augusta area pretending to be representatives from Medicare.

"What they well tell them is that they are from Medicare and that the card is in the mail and in order to make sure their funding is going into their account, they need to verify their account information," Turner said.

She also warns they ask for seniors to "verify" their Medicare number, which is often the same number as your Social Security number.

"Identity can be stolen with the use of a Medicare number, so that number should never except the person who provides your physical care," she warned.

Paul Dyer, 90, was almost a victim of a scam but thought quick enough before giving out his information.

"There are a lot of people that prey on old people. Hang that phone up just as quick as someone starts talking to you and wants to know something you know they shouldn't know. Hang that phone up," he said.

If you suspect you have been victim, call the Federal Trade Commission at (877) 438-4338.

The BBB also recommends NOT carrying your Medicare card in your wallet. Treat it like a Social Security card and keep in a safe place in your home.
