AIKEN, S.C. -- A new health initiative focusing on women is launching at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. The organizers of the program says it's the only one of its kind in the region.

Always on the go, Renay Trotter says, "I'm one of those people that juggle career and family."

On top of balancing kids and a career, Trotter also has her health to worry about. The two-time heart attack survivor is the first woman to sign up for Aiken Regional Medical Centers' Women Enlightened for Better Health.

"It offers an avenue for women who are busy like me, full-time career, full-time family," she said.

Aiken Regional says they hope more women like Trotter will take matters of health into their own hands.

The nurse navigator for the program, Lauree Caldwell, explained, "Taking charge of that, addressing those needs and working on preventative medicine."

Nurse navigators help members decide which screening they need and educate them about preventative care.

"Sometimes when you focus on one medical issue," Trotter said. "You have you let other ones fall by the wayside."

Keeping track of all those appointments can be hard for Trotter, so busy she needs two phone to keep up.

"Women go through so many different phases," Caldwell said. "We want to make sure they are getting the appropriate screening at the right time."

The free service also offers online tools that encourage education along with offering incentives to earn rewards. It's not like a regular doctor's visit. Every health issue is heard and addressed by the nurse navigator.

"Doesn't have to be for you, the woman that signs up. It can be for your child or your husband," Trotter said.

Making it easier to access health care information, and for Trotter, an easier visit to the doctor's office next time around.

The program just started this year. Members will have access to educational programs and reduced fees for certain classes.
