AUGUSTA, Ga. -- New equipment on board Columbia County ambulances has already helped save lives.

Medics use a new hands-off approach on some patients with the help of the LUCAS 2. When EMTs are counting on every minute, one slip of the hand during a rough ride in the back of an ambulance is never good for a patient.

Michael Willis, director of clinical services for Gold Cross Ambulance, said, "If we are moving up and down the road or hit a bump or railroad tracks, we can lose hand placement. This machine does not."

That's why now all Columbia County ambulances come equipped with the LUCAS 2 automatic chest compressor. At more than $12,000 a piece, when it comes to saving lives, Willis says it's a priceless piece of technology that's helped save lives within the first few weeks of use.

"The first week that we used it out of four cardiac arrests, we had one safe. That's significant when you are looking at blocks of numbers like that," he added.

EMTs can have the LUCAS 2 ready to go in 20 to 30 seconds for continuous chest compressions.

"We place the device on the patient, hit a couple of buttons and the machine starts to compress at a rate of 2 inches in depth continuously, as long as the machine is on," Willis said.

EMTs can have the LUCAS 2 ready to go in 20 to 30 seconds for continuous chest compressions. At 102 rapid chest compressions per minute, the portable life saver is quick and easy to use.

"It doesn't get tired, the only downfall is the battery," Willis added.

Once it's strapped on, the pumps are consistent and uniform and takes human hands out of the equation.

Gold Cross says this is the only region that has access to the LUCAS 2. Columbia County, Richmond County and Jefferson County ambulances are all equipped with the device on board their ambulances.
