AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Shatara Brown had to stay at Knights Inn off Boy Scout Road in Augusta for several days but says her stay cost her more than the nightly rates.
"I had just been itching, so I noticed some bumps on her neck. I'm thinking it's mosquito bites from outside," she said.
That was until Brown saw this: "He flipped the pillow over, it was a lot of them. He moved the covers, it was a lot of them under the covers."
These critters are ones Brown says she and her children were sleeping with for a week at Knights Inn.
"When I woke up, I seen them all over my baby's arm, bleeding, puss, everything. And then, all over my forehead," Brown said.
She and her family went from the hotel to a hospital. They received bites to the forehead, to the arms, to the face. Bites that left marks seen in photos.
News 12 took her claims to the Health Department.
Richmond County Environmental Health Manager Randy Wishard told News 12, "Our office did receive a complaint and the inspector that inspects the hotel on a normal basis was given it and had gone out and spoke with management."
"So, we have confirmed there were bed bugs in the room?" asked News 12's Sheli Muniz.
"Yes, mmhmm," Wishard replied.
Bed bugs that have left a little one itchy, left one scarred and a mother looking for answers.
The owners of Knights Inn told News 12 it is not their fault.
They say Brown didn't complain until her sixth day at the hotel and by that point there was no way to prove she didn't bring them in.
Wishard says those bugs don't generate in a room. He says they have to be carried there. Wishard urged hotel guests to check their sheets and pillows for anything that looks like ground pepper.
Meanwhile, the Knights Inn owners say that room is empty until they can be absolutely certain the bed bugs are gone.
