Ming Wah investigated by Environmental Health Services

December 11, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---News 12 has learned that Environmental Health Services has visited the Ming Wah Chinese restaurant on Walton Way and given the owner instructions concerning health violations.

Michael Allison, county manager for Environmental Health Services, tells News 12 that a specialist spoke with the owner of Ming Wah yesterday. The owner reportedly stated that he hangs sun dried pork jerky outside his restaurant for the use of his friends, not for restaurant customers.

The specialist told the owner that he was still in violation of health regulations because he did not have a license for that type of food and because the food was present at a permitted food service establishment.

The wife of the restaurant owner told News 12 today that an employee put the meat outside for personal use, and that employee has been fired.

Allison says the restaurant will receive a letter explaining the regulations further to avoid future misunderstandings, and if the dried pork is seen hanging outside the restaurant again, the owner will be cited and taken before a judge.

According to health regulations, food intended for customers must be packaged properly and held at the appropriate temperature. The food must be kept at 41 degrees or less when uncooked, and cooked food must be kept at 135 degrees or hotter.

for all those that are saying "im not eating there ever again, or its really disgusting," yeah it was wrong for who ever did it, but here's what i have to say... At one point in time, you have ate at this establishment. And at that time, did you ever get sick? What about other restaurants? How well do you know the employees there who prepare your food? I'm not saying that what Ming Wah did is right, its just that everywhere, any restauarant, it doesnt mean only Chinese, American, Korean, Japanese, Mexican and all others do something like this, its just that Ming Wah was caught. so save all the i'm not eating there or any of that stuff.

Lynnsey - I appreciate your follow up and explanation. I still think it should have stopped with a question and answer session with the owners. Then the reporter would have understood that this meat drying in the sun was not meant for the customers. This would have stopped anyone (even if the owner did not fire himself) but might have saved an innocents job. It is unfortunate that after 200 plus years in existence the United States is still so painfully backwards as some of these posts indicate. I give up and fully appreciate the good fortune that allowed me to travel the world and learn about other cultures. If no one has died (or hey even complained about being ill) after eating there, then once again this was much ado about nothing. However it did cost a person his livelihood right before Christmas. Guilt is a powerful emotion for sure.

My main concern is if the so called pork was for personal use for the owners family and friends why did the employee get fired? it was for the owners use so no employee should be fired. second why didnt anyone want to speak? and the one that does speak gets fired. that dont make since. and that does not look like port! Dont food come packaged up and kept in a freezer??? so why do it look like that? I know good and well it wasnt packed like that. I think that meat should have been tested to avoid bad business if it really is pork. but that look like meat they chopped theirself from something and dont if you hang meat out all day it gets spoiled?? There really needs to be an update on this story of what that really is. And for the comments of people calling the south stupid needs to do some research of the resturants in the SOUTH and see how many cooked things

I think the Environmental Health Service did not do their job. They should have tested the meat to see what it was. It is not pork. What restaurant hangs meat outside to dry. I will be contacting EHS bacause the restuarant should be closed and they need to check others chinese restuarant.

Disgusting! The Health Department must be extremely naive to think they weren't serving that meat to the public. They should be shut down! That does not look anything like pork!

"THERE'S ALWAYS TALK ABOUT CHINESE RESTAURANTS PREPARING FOOD WITH CATS, DOGS, POSSUMS, RATS, AND ALL OTHER KIND OF ROAD KILL." I think you have Chinese people mixed up with your good ol southern boys. Rednecks are the ones known for eating road kill. I've never seen a Chinese person jump out of their car to grab a dead cat off the side of the road but I have seen a white man jump out of their truck to pull some roadkill deer into their truck. Disgusting

check out Happy China at the 15th St. shopping plaza. they can prep foods just steamed, with sauces on the side, as well as cook with a lighter white sauce for their foods. the buffet sometimes have anise beef, something delicious not usually found in most other restaurants.

The only thing that makes me sick is the ignorance from most of the posters here. I bet the people who own that chinese restaraunt speak with better grammar than some of you. This is obviously not somethhing they served the customers. It is these kinds of attitudes that make me want to move away from the South. You people make me sick.

In reponse to the post made by Queen4842, the man News 12 spoke with on camerai is Mr. Chen, the owner of the restaraunt according to himself and Mr. Allison. When News 12 returned to Ming Wah on Tuesday and spoke with Mr. Allison, Mr. Chen was there and we offered him another chance to speak on camera. He declined he said because of his English skills, not because he had anything to hide. We also spoke with his wife over the phone, and she informed us the employee at fault for hanging the meat was fired, and Mr. Chen supported that claim. Mr. Chen is still employeed at the restaraunt as far as News 12 knows, as he is the owner.
